Imperial Beach History

Imperial Beach was founded around June of 1887 by R.R. Morrison. He was a developer who subdivided the area. George Chaffey later bought a large area of land to build a resort for residents of Imperial Valley. It is thought the name of Imperial Beach came from the venture. During the 1880's, the area was part of a larger land boom with many homes, businesses and hotels being erected. The first pier was built in 1909. It was hoped the wave action would help to generate electricity, but never really accomplished its purposes in that respect. The pier was finally washed out to sea in 1948 after gradually falling into disrepair.
